Family history research is ideally centered around the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS), which consists of:
- Reasonably exhaustive research
- Complete and accurate source citations
- Thorough analysis and correlation of the collected information
- Resolution of any conflicting evidence
- Soundly written conclusion based on the strongest evidence
