When enabled, group objects cause redundant metadata to be read multiple times; disabling them reduces repetition.
JAWS (Job Access with Speech) is a screen reader that blind guests use to access FamilySearch Family Tree. JAWS allows users to find and view information about people on Family Tree, add new people to Family Tree, reserve temple ordinances, and more.
Family Tree uses group objects to display the person’s name, sex, ID, and birth and death years. Group objects are used to display this information on the Person, Tree, Temple, and Find screens. By default, group objects are enabled with JAWS, causing the metadata to be displayed. If group objects are disabled in JAWS, the metadata is no longer displayed.
Here is an example of what JAWS reads when group objects are enabled:
group start Elizabeth English female 1872–Deceased GNZT-R4L
Elizabeth English
Female 1872–Deceased
GNZT-R4L
group end Elizabeth English female 1872–Deceased GNZT-R4L
Here is an example of what JAWS reads when group objects are disabled:
Elizabeth English
Female 1872–Deceased
GNZT-R4L
You can see from the example that the information is displayed multiple times when group objects are enabled, and only once when group objects are disabled. Group objects can be disabled to prevent redundant information from being displayed.
To disable group objects:
- From your web browser, press Insert + 6 on the numbers row to bring up the JAWS Settings Center.
- Type “web verbosity” to quickly move to the web verbosity settings. Three results are displayed.

- Press the down arrow to move to the web verbosity level displayed in step 3. Press Spacebar to open a list of settings for the selected web verbosity.
- Press G to jump to the Group setting. If Group is checked, the web Verbosity is enabled. Press Spacebar to disable it.
